Of all the candidates whose names will appear on ballots around North Carolina in November's general election, none travel a more politically awkward campaign trail than those running for upper court judges' seats. Most people in the nation couldn't name a member of their respective state's supreme court. And even fewer know much at all about the appeals. But just like any other political aspirants, those seeking a bench slot on these courts do the baby-kissing, hand-shaking and back-slapping that goes with all campaigning. Court of Appeals judges Ann Marie Calabria and Barbara Jackson want voters to know they seek to adhere to the state Constitution and the law when they make their rulings - even laws they might personally disagree with. Calabria has a bit of name-recognition advantage in the Fayetteville area. She used to practice family law - divorce and related matters - in Fayetteville with Terry Hutchens.
